Planning Ahead

Create a Moving Checklist

Having a detailed checklist ensures that you don't overlook any important tasks. Your checklist should include:

  • Notifying your Landlord: Make sure you provide your current landlord with the proper move-out notice.
  • Scheduling Movers: Book a reliable moving company or rent a moving truck ahead of time.
  • Gathering Supplies: Collect boxes, packing tape, bubble wrap, and labels to ensure everything is organized properly.
  • Forwarding Mail: Change your mailing address with the post office and notify all important contacts.
  • Utilities: Schedule disconnection at your current residence and transfer utilities into your name at your new residence.

Declutter Before You Pack

Moving is the perfect time to get rid of any items that you no longer need. You can donate, sell, or recycle items that you haven't used in the last year or so. This will help reduce the number of things that you need to pack, making the moving process much cleaner.

Pack an Essentials Box

It is wise to pack a box filled with items that you will need immediately upon moving into your new home. Some of these items include:

  • Toiletries
  • Change of clothes
  • Important documents
  • Snacks and water
  • Basic kitchen supplies
  • Chargers for your devices

Packing Tips

  • Start Early: Begin packing well in advance of your moving date. Start with non-essential items like seasonal clothing, books, and decorations. This approach will spread out the work and reduce last-minute stress.
  • Use Quality Packing Supplies: Make sure to retrieve sturdy boxes and packing materials to protect your belongings. Fragile items should be wrapped in bubble wrap or packing paper. Reinforce the boxes with packing tape. The last thing you need on moving day is several broken items to due faulty packing supplies.
  • Label Everything: Use a marker or label maker to clearly label each box with its contents and the room it belongs to in your new home. This will make the unpacking process way easier and more organized.
  • Pack Room by Room: Packing one room at a time allows you to stay organized throughout the packing process. This will make labeling each box with the proper destination a much easier process and will help you avoid mixing items from different areas.

Moving Day

  • Confirm Details with the Movers: A day or two before you move, you should confirm all details with your moving company to ensure no issues arise. Make sure they have the proper addresses, scheduled times, and any other special instructions
  • Prepare Your Home: Ensure your current home is all packed up and ready for the movers to come in. Disassemble furniture that needs to be taken apart and protect floors and walls from damage. Have a clear path for movers to navigate through your home.
  • Stay Hydrated and Take Breaks: Moving can be physically demanding, so don't forget to drink plenty of water and take breaks as needed to avoid dehydration or injury. Keep some water and snacks on hand for yourself and the movers.
  • Survive the Loading Process: Be present throughout the loading process to oversee the handling of your belongings. Provide directions as needed and answer any questions the movers may have for you.
  • Perform a Final Walkthrough: Before leaving your old home, do a final walkthrough to ensure that nothing has been left behind. Make sure to check every cabinet, closet, and storage area.
